
The Hazelnut (Corylus avellana) is the nut of a hazel, and may also be known as filbert or as a cob nut. The hazelnut is belongs to a group of tree nuts which are a leading cause of allergic reactions to people. Proteins present in the hazelnut can trigger allergic reactions in some people, with symptoms presenting as mild skin irritations through to deadly anaphylaxis.
Hazelnut is used throughout the food industry as an ingredient and can be present in a range of products including baked goods, confectionary, ice cream and salad dressings. People who have an allergic reaction to hazelnut must follow an exclusion diet and pay particular attention to product allergen statements. In turn food processors and laboratories must provide accurate and reliable data on their food labels, and have confidence in the test methods they use for the detection / quantitation of allergens.
